Affordable Energy Coalition Statement On Request To DOE Regarding Emergency Powers

Washington, D.C., June 1, 2018 – Today, the Affordable Energy Coalition (AEC) released the following statement in response to President Trump’s request to Secretary Perry “to prepare immediate steps” and provide recommendations for implementation of emergency powers to subsidize coal and nuclear plants:

“There is no national emergency justifying the use of these powers. Independent experts, regional grid operators, and even the government’s own data show that competitive electricity markets keep the lights on and prices affordable. The only thing that this order helps is the bottom line of a few energy companies,” said Michael Steel, spokesperson for AEC. “A decision as important as this must not be made at the expense of American consumers.”

The AEC represents a diverse group of organizations, businesses, and communities focused on keeping energy affordable for American consumers.
